I'm Lyn Slade a needle felting artist, teacher and author of Creative Needle Felting, Wool Art with a Painterly Style.
I've been needle felting fine art for 20 years. Back when the only things you saw were little primitive sheep figures and such, I realized that needle felting into wool textile was like painting with wool and I developed it into an art form. I had projects published in Create & Decorate magazine and eventually had a recipe column with them also. When the magazine editor visited my bed & breakfast she saw the kind of needle felted art that I made for myself and recommended that they might be interested in publishing a book on the subject. So I accepted the challenge and a year later my how-to book was a reality. Though All American Crafts Publishing Co. has since closed, I have a small number of new books still available should you be interested. It covers the basics of needle felting 2-D art, 4 step by step projects, pretty full color pictures and a gallery of needle felted art for inspiration.
For years I have exhibited my work in group shows in galleries and small museums, and in solo and 2-person exhibits. I teach workshops in my new studio in Bolton MA USA, at art centers and to private groups in the north east. I speak to groups and guilds with trunk-show programs and entertaining fiber art conversations.
Being self employed running a B&B while making art, I was able to shift my schedule enough to accommodate opportunities that came my way. So I jumped at the chance to be the artist in residence in Acadia National Park for a month. My focus while I was there was to develop ways to use different mediums on my background wool to keep me interested in needle felting art while also managing any brewing repetitive motion injuries. The entire AIR experience was a life changing one and also changed my felted art greatly. It was an experience I'll never forget and be forever grateful for.
After the pandemic shuttered my B&B I decided to semi-retire and focus on making and teaching art. I'm living in a sweet newly created apartment with a light bright studio attached to the 1812 farm house where I ran the B&B. I feel so lucky to be able to create freely and as often as I like. I'm blessed to open my space to gatherings of creative humans, share food or art or both and soak up the special energy of creative community.
On the next page you'll find workshops and events that I have coming up. If you are interested in booking a speaking gig, a needle felting retreat or intensive you can be in touch using lyn@lynslade.com or (978) 875-5270.
